The Path

Image-bearer and new person. You are a living likeness of the King. In Christ you are a new creation; you put off the old man and put on the new, renewed after the image of Him that created you. Your wife, sons, and neighbors should be able to tell something of what God is like by how you live.

Son of God and vice-regent. You are adopted; you cry Abba, Father. Then you rule under the King, in His name—not because He is absent, and not as if you were Him. He gives real charge and would not break His word about it.

כֹּהֵן (kohen) — priest. The man who stands before God and serves, not the man who lords over the house. The verb kahan is to minister / officiate. In the garden the same idea is abad (work/serve) and shamar (keep/guard).

Priest is presence and service before God for the house—not power for its own sake.

You serve in God’s presence. You are the spiritual leader of your family and of those you have influence over. You keep His word. You walk with Him. You do not treat worship as someone else’s job. You teach His words when you sit, walk, lie down, and rise.

You are covenant head of your marriage and house. You answer to God for that union. Your wife is not head of you.

You were given the command before she was formed. God called you first in the garden: “Where art thou?” You command your household in the way of the Lord. You manage your house.

That headship looks like Christ: you go first in love, first in repentance, first in prayer, first in provision and protection, first in laying your life down—not first in comfort.

It is not good for you to be alone. God made you a corresponding helper. The mandate is given to you together. Leave father and mother and cleave to your wife. Love her as Christ loved the church. Do not be harsh. Dwell with her according to knowledge. Honor her as co-heir, or your prayers are hindered. She is not your child and not your servant. She is your counterpart. Pact never takes her place.

You guard what God put in your care (shamar): your wife, children, name, and inheritance. You keep harm out. You keep what is good from rotting. You do not send her to face the serpent while you stay quiet.

You work. You cultivate. You see that your house has enough now. After the Fall the ground fights you; you still work it. If you will not provide for your own, you have denied the faith.

You put seed in the ground for later. Provide is enough for today. Plant is fruit tomorrow—field, herd, house, and the Word. You labor. God gives the increase.

Provide feeds today. Plant builds what your sons will walk in.

You rule the work God gave you under His hand. Dominion is not a throne for your ego. It is charge over land, beasts, labor, and order so your house can flourish. In the home that rule runs through you as patriarch. Naming the animals is this authority used.

Be fruitful. Multiply. Fill the earth. Children are a heritage from the Lord, not an accessory to your life.

You do not only beget sons—you form them. You teach the Word in the house. You do not provoke them to wrath. You bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. This is the same Deuteronomy charge as Priest, aimed at the children.

You open your mouth. You make disciples. You tell what God has done. You are ready to give an answer. This is not only a pulpit. It is a man who will not be silent about the King.

You stand with other men who fear God. Iron sharpens iron. You let them ask. You do not hide. You bear their burdens and they bear yours. You exhort one another so that none of you hardens. That band does not outrank your wife.

Speak to God. Do not carry the charge alone. Ask, thank, intercede for your wife and house. Honor her so your prayers are not hindered.

Turn the work back to God. Dominion ends in worship, not pride. A prince who will not praise becomes a tyrant. Joy lives here.

Meditate on the Word. Turn it over, keep it, do it. Do not skim and guess at God’s will. The book stays in your mouth and in your house.

Stop and listen. Prayer is not a monologue. Be still. The Spirit agrees with the Word you have pondered. A “leading” that breaks Purity, Partner, or Penitent is not God.

Pause tests what you heard against the Word you already pondered.

Keep the one-flesh union clean. Rule your body, eyes, mouth, and temper. Self-control. A hidden life will hollow out Priest, Patriarch, and Partner.

Own the wrong. Name it. Turn. Do not say, “The woman You gave me.” A patriarch confesses first. Sorry that still shifts blame is not repentance.

Receive mercy and give it. Drop the ledger against your wife and sons. Forgive as you have been forgiven.

Go after God and what is good. Do not drift and call it peace. Seek Him. Press on. Chase righteousness, faith, love, peace, holiness.

Walk in wisdom so your strength builds the house instead of breaking it. See ahead. Name things truly—as you were first taught to do with the animals.

Suffer long with people and with delay. Do not explode and call it leadership. Wait for fruit. Planting requires this.

Do not quit the covenant, the work, the raising, or the faith when it is hard. Patience is how you wait. Persevere is how you stay.
